We got our first standard several months ago. She is a 2 year old cream coloured wonderful friend and our older Border Collie (10) has accepted her as a playmate. I look forward to learning more about the care of this curly coat, very different for a "collie" person.
Congratulations on your new family member! I'm sure your Border Collie appreciates having a new pack member, too! I'm sure you know that you have the #1 and #2 smartest breeds!!! Lucky you!
Congratulations! It always amazes me how 'deep' this breed is . . . they have very complex personalities and mannerisms that are unique to jus them . . . amazing stuff.
Thanks for the welcome. One of my main reasons for looking for a poodle was brains. I knew that Keelyn (Border Collie) would appreciate any other dog who was just a smart as she is and that's why Ginger (Standard Poodle) is the right match. My big learning curve is going to be grooming, while Keelyn gets groomed it's a whole different world with Ginger so I've posted on the Grooming forum and hope for some help.
Aussie owner here- who added an adult standard a few weeks ago. YUP the grooming is different- but on a short clip not that hard- slicker brush and my comb- i did bernie yesterday after about 3 days of not (though checking him daily) and took me maybe 3 minutes to run over with teh slicker and used the comb on the elbows- behind the ears etc to get them good.
the Aussies? Well the slicker barely touches her- i have to comb or rake her- and god love blowing coat season *L*
So don't stress over the grooming- keep her pretty clean- give her a quick run over every day or two- and to keep life easier- keep the coat short. which means you MAY want to learn how to clip- or get to know your groomer really well and well those silly continental cuts shave 1/2 the dog down close- thats a lot less dog to groom (seriously i am contemplating it for summer!)
so i second- go to the grooming forum- browse- i spent a efw hours my first week here browsing the posts and getting 'up to speed' in what was available for clips
