Considering a poodle
My wife and I are in our early 30s in Birmingham, AL. We are seriously considering getting a mini poodle. Neither of us owned dogs before in our lives so we are a little skittish.
I hope to learn more about them before we make the commitment .

You've come to the right place to learn about all things poodle. As a mini owner myself, I say I like how you're thinking! Ask all the questions you like and enjoy looking through the forum. I hope you and your wife will soon be enjoying a mpoo of your own.

Considering a poodle
I had an apricot mini as a child and she lived to be almost 18. She was awesome. Now I have toys. Poodles are the best.

You're on the right track for your first dog. Take your time and choose exactly the poodle you want. You will never regret it.

Hey! I'm down in LA (Lower Alabama) and I have a mini! I got her from the shelter, but there are lots of ways to get a poodle. Mini is a great size - not so small that you're afraid of crushing her and not so big that she needs TONS of exercise (or a big yard). Of course, that's not to say that toys and spoos aren't just WONDERFUL babies! (mini size just suits our family best)
I grew up with a toy who lived about 20 years and we just got our mini in April. Do your research and then dive in! We had a Westie for 15 years as well and she was fantastic, but a poodle is just amazing!
Just look through the pictures thread here and you'll be smitten!

Make sure you stop and talk to any owners you see. I'm sure they'd love to share their experience!

Our mini boy, Beau, was our first-ever dog. We finally broke down and got him about three tears ago after many, many years of being asked by our younger daughter, who is now 16. In hindsight, I now wish we had taken the plunge back when she first began asking, because we are just head over heels in love with our sweet boy. Now none of us can imagine life without a poodle. Heck, the house feels empty and lonely when he's gone at the groomer for a few hours!
Tip: Beau was 6 months old when we got him, and getting an older, potty trained pup turned out to be a very smart move for us canine newbies. Well-bred older pups -- or even adults -- aren't so easy to find, but they are out there, and I have never regretted missing the tiny puppy stage.

Great choise!!! I think that for the first time as poodle owner you think good about the size.I had first two dwarfs but now I have 2 miniatures( moyens) .Miniature is not to small and not to big.Great size for travelling, for appartment.....for any situation if you need to take your dog in the arm ( simetimes I can go inside post,bank....without problem-but big dogs need to stay outside),good size for grooming-you need to be prepared that poodle really need regular grooming.Miniatures are great for sport so if you are sport couple the poodle is great choise. But showing poodle is also super way to stay outside, meet interesting people and one really new world :-)Poodle is really great companion dog so congratulation for your decision and good luck with future puppy!!!
