Hello from new member
Hi Everyone,
My name is Darcy and I live in Houston, TX.
I am the proud owner of a black, male, standard poodle named Leo.
Leo is 10 1/2 weeks old. He is a pure joy, when he is not being a little devil.
I have had toys and minis, but Leo is my first standard.
I also have my little princess girl Maggie. Maggie is a 15 year old, phantom toy poodle. she weighs 6 1/2 pounds. Maggie is now blind and almost completely deaf. She lost her sight about 4 years ago. I took her to the best specialist in New Jersey at that time, but there was nothing they could do to save her vision.
My biggest concern with Leo is his rough play with Maggie. Maggie just wants to lay on the couch and go outside and walk the perimeter. Leo just wants to play and nips hard at her legs! Will this change when he gets older?
Also, Leo is going through his biting puppy stage and bites everything and everyone. I correct him with "off" and clicker training and he responds very well. But, Leo is stubborn and rarely listens unless I have my trainer treat bag on or clicker in hand. Leo also "humps" my legs. I have never had a puppy do this, so I don't know if this is "normal" or a dominance thing?
I am very interested in getting Leo in agility and obediance. I want to get him in class, but I am waiting until he builds up his immunity. I am following the Dr. Jean Dodds minimum shot schedule for vaccinations to avoid over vaccinating and auto immune diesases as an adult. I lost my precious mini Lisa two years ago to Cushings Disease and I don't want to go through that heartache again! So, in the meantime, I am clicker training at home about twice a day for 10 to 15 minutes in between feedings, playtime and naps. Leo picks up very quickly, but like I said, he is very stubborn and seems not to listen unless I have trainer pouch and clicker in hand.
My favorite time with Leo is late at night when he is too tired to nip and bite at my hands. He lays peacefully by my side on the couch next to Maggie and allows for petting and sweet kisses. He will also be calm and less nippy with Maggie and I love seeing them together snuggled up.
I am happy for this forum. I know I will have questions on Leo and happy to have other poodle owners to talk to as he grows.
