Hi everyone!

My name is Charlotte and as you can see in the title, I'm from Belgium!
So I want to apologize in advance if my spelling or grammar looks a bit weird, but English is not my first language. Comes right after Dutch and French.
I have been reading along on this forum for a while now and I have learned a lot!

On November 16th my future miniature poodle puppy, James, was born.
He'll be a big mini because the breed standards in Belgium and the Netherlands are different from the ones in the US.
His mom is about 37cm and weighs 7-8kg and his dad is about 38cm and weighs 8-9kg.
In Belgium and the Netherlands this size of poodle is called "Middenslag", if you would translate that to English it would be called "Medium".

I believe he would be a very small Standard poodle in US terms?


In a little less then a month I'm going to visit the puppies for the first time, they will then be 6 weeks old and I will have to choose the one that will be a big part of my life for many years to come. I'm so looking forward too that!

Of course time will tell what kind of dog James will become but I would love to do some agility, obedience and frisbee with him.
We are also going to do some shows as I plan to, in time, become a breeder of these wonderful balls of fluffiness

I look forward to read along and contribute on this forum and I will open a new post in a couple of days with pictures of the puppies as they are coming by mail (actual physical mail )

Welcome to the forum, Charlotte! What are the various poodle size categories called there in Belgium? At 38 cm, your pup's sire is just slighly under 15 inches, which here in US is the maximum height for what we call a "mini" or miniature poodle. My boy Beau is an "oversize mini," at about 16.5-17 inches. Whatever you call it, it's a great size!

I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of your pup, James. What color is he?

The poodle sizes according to the FCI (Belgium, The Netherlands,...) are put into 4 categories: Toy (under 24 to 28cm but no less then 24) Dwarf or Miniature (28 to 36cm) Medium (36 to 45cm) and Standard or Large (45 to 62cm) for all sizes we have a minimum and a maximum size to keep the breed as healthy as possible.

I hope James will be a larger Medium (40cm would be very nice) because I am afraid the Medium is going to bled together with the Dwarf and disappear. And I really like the size
James is a white poodle, my favorite color for dogs

I have looked at your pictures of Beau and he is (as his name suggested) a very beautiful dog!

I expect to receive the pictures of James and his brothers and sisters next week as they are then 2 weeks old and will have opened their eyes. I'll be sure to scan them and post them on the forum

Having four official sizes as you do makes more sense than our three, which include toy (10" max), miniature (15" max) and standard (>15"). The need for a fourth size between mini and standard seems obvious. Beau is about 42 cm, which disqualifies him from showing as a mini and makes him too small to be competitive as a standard. Not that I care, because showing was never something we were contemplating. But this big-mini/small-standard range seems ideal to us for a family pet.
