Hello!
We've been researching breeds for a while now and a Poodle seems to be the right fit. Browsing the forums has been educational, but now it's time to ask some quesitons of our own

Welcome and ask away. You will get lots of answers to most questions you ask and then you can have fun sorting through the replies to get the picture of what you are looking for and need to do. Poodles are awesome! What size are you thinking of? Do you have any thoughts about obedience, agility or other dog sports?

Size does seem to be the main factor for us. All the other poodle qualities (energy level, exercise need, good with cats, and light on the drooling/shedding/smelling) are perfect for us. After dog-sitting a friend's lab for several days, we've decided that we would like something a little smaller than that. We're currently looking for something between miniture and standard, probably around 17-18". A poodle of that size will also be quite a bit less bulky than a lab.
We've done a bunch of internet searching and finding someone breeding poodles of this size seems hard enough, let alone someone within reasonable driving distance. Looks like we may end up hopping on a plane for a visit. Right now our best prospect is Karbit, which seems to be pretty respected here.

A few of us on the Forum have oversized minis, and they are only slightly smaller than what you are looking for. For example our boy, Beau, is about 16.5", which we think is about perfect. Just guessing, but unless you can find a real moyen/klein (not easy in the US!), I suspect you're more likely to find a big mini than a (very) small standard. I know one thing for sure -- we love our maxi-minis!

Lily is a standard and measures 22 3/4" at withers, but she is otherwise pretty dainty. She only weighs about 35-37 pounds. She can be picked up easily if needed and she is like a feather on a leash. I have seen other smaller females that are loosely related to her. If you are interested send me a PM and I will tell you more about her background.
