New poodle owner-Hi from Kentucky!
My name is Michelle and my family and I are new to having a poodle own us (me, actually). I had been looking for a smaller dog to add to our family, one that could go to work with me some. I happened to stop at the Humane Society in Bowling Green and just wanted to look around. About 6 kennels down, this little fella grabbed my heart and just tugged it completely out. One of the staff members got him out for me to hold, check him out. I couldn't turn loose from that moment on.
Scooter, who was formerly "Lucas", made his way not only into my heart that day, but also into our home. He is actually a poodle/doxie cross, but bless his heart, I could care less what breed(s) he came from. The fact that he just makes our family complete is all that matters. He has the body of a doxie, with the little out-turned from feet, but the coat of a poodle. I'm not sure of the temperment of which is more predominant (that's why I'm here-to learn more).
There have been a few setbacks with my little fella. My vet thinks he'd been abused by his former owners. I'm not sure as he's not shy nor aggressive in any way. But possibly because of his physical condition. Scooter had to not only be neutered, at age 4, but while at the humane society, he also had to have about 20 of his smaller teeth removed. Apparently, the former owners did not care for his oral health. He also brought home kennel cough which required treatment both for him and for my older dog, Max, another shelter rescue we've had in our family for 11 years.
I'm still struggling with completing his housetraining. I never had to do it with Max. We lived in the country at the time he was little, and he stayed outside most of the time. When he started staying inside at night, he already knew he was supposed to go on the grass. Scooter, not so much! The kennel and Scooter are getting to know one another very well.
I'm glad I've found this forum. I hope to be able to gather useful information and share my Scooter and Max stories with you as well.
~Michelle
