My name is Kimberly and I have a 7 yr old Portugese Water Dog named Splash and a 5 month old miniature Poodle named Rosie. I'm enjoying reading the forums and learning more about poodles.
Welcome. It would be interesting to hear in what ways PWD and poos are the same and how they are different, I mean in behavior that is breed linked. It seems that a lot of people have both breeds so they must compliment each other and attract people looking for certain characteristics.
About your question regarding PWD vs Poodle. I don't really know that much about poodles yet, I'm still learning but I can share about my PWD anyway.
Differences I've noticed: Splash was and is much more mouthy than Rosie. He was very hard to break habit of putting his mouth on people, things, chewing. He still looks for something to put in his mouth when he's excited so he won't put his mouth on the person he's with. Chews constantly on his bones. He gets hot very easily. He sleeps in the shower or on tile floor to keep cool, even in winter. Will go outside to lay in snow to chew his bone. He's very vocal and has many, many different sounds and "tries to talk" to me. He is not a barker and a terrible watch dog. Thinks everyone he meets loves him. He was an incredibly easy puppy to teach things like he needed to nap while kids did school, going outside to go potty, simple manners around the house. Hard to teach to walk nicely on leash (mostly when other dogs were around because he wanted to play) and not drag the kids around the block, to not put his mouth on peoples hands, etc. He loves to play rough with other dogs and wrestle.
Rosie is great. She isn't mouthy which I love, she chew her bones and really nothing else. She has been much harder to potty train as she doesn't let me know when she needs to go out but we're almost there. She learns quickly and is very sweet. We got her for dd who wanted a smaller dog she could walk herself and pick up. Splash can be a bit much for her to handle. She's doing great with Rosie. Her friend has a poodle mix that she loved and she wanted a dog like Roo.
We almost got another PWD this summer but decided one at a time was enough for us. We originally chose him due to allergies and dh wanted a larger dog, we'd had boxers and labs before kids and he just could't imagine having a little dog with five little kids. I looked into Labradoodles but allergist just laughed at me and told me Poodle or Poodle like dog.
Welcome to the forum! I have a miniature named Rosie also. She is only 3 months old. She is my 2nd mpoo.
I have always admired the PWD and have wanted to own one. I have never known anyone with a PWD, so I have been nervous about what to expect. I LOVE poodles and their personalities and would also be interested in anything you can share about the differences between the PWD and poodle. Can't wait to hear more about your Rosie and Splash.
Ruby was the love of my life! I miss her so much. She was the smartest, sweetest, kindest, most polite dog there ever was. I love Rosie, but she is so very different than Ruby. I can't wait to see what Rosie becomes. She is very vocal, whereas, Ruby was silent as a mouse. When we first brought Rosie home from SC, she did not want to be in the crate so she was whining and vocalizing. At one point she said, "mama". My kids were so excited. They said, "She TALKS!!! She said mama!" Too funny.
Do you groom Spash and Rosie yourself? Are there huge differences in how you groom them?
Would you say that Splash is smart? As smart as a poodle? Clever?
Does he like water? Is he athletic? (Possible running partner?) Playful like a poodle?
What would you say the cons are? Things to look out for?
My husband would like a bigger dog as well, so because of my allergies/asthma , the PWD and SPOO are the only ones on the list. We won't be ready for another dog for at least a year. I would like to get Rosie raised and my kids trained.
Thanks, Splash, for the info on the PWD and how he differs from your spoo. But what is interesting is that many of the things you said about Splash would also apply to my parti spoo. He loves to chew hard things, (my other spoo likes stuffies, soft things) bones are his favorite. He gets warm and will move off my bed to sleep part of the night on the cooler floor. He is a talker, I've tried to explain the sounds he makes to tell me different things but we seem to only have bark, growl and whine to explain dogs vocalizations and the sounds he makes are different and each have a meaning for what he is trying to tell me.
It sounds to me as if PWDs and Spoos may have a lot in common!
I'm sure they do have a lot in common. I haven't spent much time around spoos so can't really make intelligent comparison. Splash is smart but Rosie seems smarter. She is learning faster. I do not groom them myself. For me it is worth the money to take them to a good groomer. I also have 5 kids and homeschool so brushing and bathing is all I have time to do. Rosie's breeder breeds for service and therapy dogs so maybe that plays a role in her temperament.
