Hi - we picked up our standard poodle puppy, Ruby, the day after Thanksgiving. We also have an 8-yr-old Shepherd/Whippet (best guess), Kenna, and two cats. My daughter is 3, so it has been a little crazy around here lately. It's been a long time since I've had a puppy and I knew I'd have my hands full for a while. I am surprisingly nervous about this puppy. My biggest concerns are getting a handle on the grooming - I plan to initially bring her to a groomer to get her comfortable there, but I plan on learning to do it myself. I also need to get a good handle on the dynamic between her and my daughter so that they can play safely together and enjoy each others company a little more. Right now they both get over stimulated very quickly. I know it just takes time, and I'm trying to be patient, but some days it does get a little overwhelming. I am glad I found this forum. I'm hoping I can find some time to explore it a little more. I don't do a lot with social media, other than email, so this forum thing is all new to me. I tried to attach some pics, I hope it worked.

Welcome to the forum. You certainly have your hands full with multiple dogs and a young daughter. If you haven't already got them, you might want to look into baby gates and x-pens to put the puppy when you can't watch her. Also, don't forget the leash which you can use on Ruby inside when you don't want her jumping on your daughter. Sometimes you can tie the leash around your waist to tether the puppy if you want to work in the kitchen or do the laundry and you don't want her getting into trouble. A little tethering teaches the puppy that it needs to follow you and pay attention to what you are doing.

As soon as your puppy has had her vaccinations, you can take her for long walks to run off some of her energy.

Thank you for the tips. I do have an indoor play pen set up, attached to a crate. A second crate is in our bedroom, for sleeping. I keep Ruby in the pen or tethered to me or near me almost all the time. We have a fenced back yard, and Kenna has finally decided it's ok to play with Ruby on occasion so I allow her to be loose out there for a while after she goes potty. My daughter just wants to be out with us when we go out, and that's where we sometimes have problems. She is doing very well for a three year old, but sometimes she forgets the rule about not running and screaming around Ruby. Whenever Ruby starts jumping up on my daughter I just tell her "too bad" and put her in her pen or tether her. If my daughter isn't listening or obeying the rules, I make her go in the house. Sometimes I just worry Ruby isn't getting enough exercise though. The receptionist at my vet has two standards and we go in on Monday, so I'm looking forward to talking with her a little more.
