I re-read what you wrote in your first post and it occures to me that what is really disgusting about that place is the the person you talked with who gave you a tour probably has no clue why you didn't make an appointment right away and convert yourself into an instant client. They probably don't think there is anything wrong with their place. *shakes head* thats just sad.

Back in the day I think it was probably pretty common for mom and pop type grooming places and even some vet clinics to be a little on the dirty side. But pet care in general and pet grooming in particular was not a multi ga-zillion dollar industry back then either. The industry has grown so much and come so far, it's a shame that places like the one you visited have not grown and matured along with the industry trends. It would be my guess that the groomers in that shop were also not up to date on the latest methods and styles and likely do a lot of things that are outdated :(
It's either that or they are just uncareing and lazy.... I hope not though.
