I was getting my haircut last month, when one of the nail techs started getting all excited behind her station. Unbeknownst to me, her little shihtzu was in her bed, by her feet, having puppies. The woman let out a big squeal when she found it was a girl, because girls go for more money, and was also most excited that they were really tiny, because everyone wants tiny dogs right now. There they were, right in the fume-laden salon. She actually cut the umbilical cords with the scissors she was using on her clients, and was using the towels from the salon as well. She was all excited about this litter because the daddy wasn't a year old yet, and belonged to her neighbor, and she didn't even have to pay for stud services. She chose him because he was so tiny, and would make tiny puppies. This was the mom's 4th litter. I was completely disgusted by her, and her cavalier attitude. "Yes! There's July's house payment!" Is a direct quote. The good news is that everyone else was disgusted too. Unfortunately she owns the salon, because if it had been left to popular vote, what was going one wouldn't have. No health testing, no care for conformation, no proper whelping area...grrrrr. Quite the heated debate ensued, but nothing we said would make a bit of difference.

Have you ever heard the story of the starfish? The starfish story: making a difference!
Well that's what you folks who work in rescue do. "Made a difference to that one!"
